Help Build a Strawbale Building in Derbyshire

Whistlewood Common has an exciting opportunity for volunteers to help build their straw bale roundhouse this summer. The building will be sited on a community-owned woodland and used as a classroom, workshop venue, event space, theatre and arts venue, as well as being available to hire for individuals and groups.

If you've always wanted to learn sustainable building skills this is your chance. The roundhouse will feature rammed tyre foundations, straw bale walls, a floor made from 9000 wine bottles, lime render (outside), lime plaster (inside), a shingle roof (local cedar), a timber frame (local timber), a verandah with a living roof and a stage facing an  amphitheatre.

Follow the group's Facebook page to be kept informed of opportunities to help with the build, inclduing fortnightly Saturday afternoon sessions.

You can follow the progress of the build on the Roundhouse Blog.
