Time is Running Out For Free Insulation

Time is running out for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire residents to take advantage of lofty savings on their energy bills. A number of free and heavily subsidised schemes operate in the two counties, however their funding will end at the end of December.

At present many schemes will install loft and cavity wall insulation for free. After December 2013 these measures are likely to cost several hundred pounds each. Local Authorities are urging local people to prepare for winter and beat rising energy prices by applying now.

See our insulation pages for more information on the scheme operating in your area.

Fantastic Home Visits Chesterfield's Market Fresh

Visitors to Chesterfield's 'Market Fresh' Event on 4th August were able to get advice on energy efficiency and take away free energy and water saving items,

Enquiries ranged from how to save water from someone who had just moved into a house on a water meter to how to make the most of energy generated by a solar panel from someone who had just had them installed on their home.

The free items given away were worth just over £500 and will collectively save those using them almost £13,000 on their energy bills in the years to come.

Our giant game of 'Low Carbon Snakes and Ladders (pictured) was popular with both children and 'Madame Zuchinni' who was helping children to make vegetable people on the stall next to us.

Energy Bike is a Hit at Oakwood Gala

Dozens of children from the Oakwood area of Derby had the opportunity to demonstrate pedal power at the Oakwood Gala on 4th August thanks to Marches Energy Agency's Energy Bike.

Children queued to find out if they could pedal hard enough to power two types of lightbulb - an old incandescent bulb and a newer low energy lightbulb.

Working with Oakwood Neighbourhood Forum for the day, MEA were also able to offer adults free energy saving freebies and refer households to Derby City Council's free loft and cavity wall insulation scheme Warmstreets. The free items given away were worth more than £500 in total and will collectively save those who took them almost £12,000 on their energy bills in the years to come.

The Sun Shines as the Fantastic Home Visits Keyworth Show

Despite a poor forecast the weather was glorious until five minutes from the end of the show and the people of Keyworth seemed determined to make the best of the day and enjoy their show. MEA’s volunteer Diane, Sheila and Jenny from Rushcliffe Borough Council, and Tim Baldwin of MEA were kept busy for most of the day. There was a great deal of interest in the WATT Bike with both parents and children battling to see who could generate enough to power their favorite gadgets for the longest.

There were several referrals for loft and cavity wall insulation and lots of interesting conversations about renewable technologies, especially about a switch that has been developed that allows a solar PV array to charge up the immersion heater in the home once there is enough sunlight. There was also a lot of interest in the government’s new Green Deal scheme and what it might provide for householders.

All in all a great day out!
