Sir Martin Doughty
Sir Martin Doughty is the chair of Natural England and a high profile environmentalist in Derbyshire. He travels a fair bit around England and almost invariably uses the train. In fact, his total car mileage, including personal, is only about 3,000 miles a year. He recently had his loft insulation significantly thickened so much that the plumber complained when he had to do something in the loft! The house is fully fitted with low energy light bulbs throughout. To save water, Sir Martin has six rainwater butts for the garden and does not use a hose. A small area in the garden has been set aside for growing organic fruit and vegetables. All kitchen putrescible waste either goes to the hens or on the compost heap and the family recycle as much as their local Council currently allows and some more besides.
