Rise to the Climate Challenge
25 May 2007
The launch in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire early this spring of a pledge campaign that asks us to think about doing small, every day things which together can make a big difference, will focus on how our current lifestyles contribute to climate change and the part we can all play in tackling the problem.
Matched finance from the governments Climate Challenge Fund means that local authorities in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are working in partnership to launch a pledged-based campaign to inform, advise and help us tackle climate change together.
Using a purpose-built web site and campaign vehicle, featuring a wind generator and solar panels, the campaign will take the message, to households, the workplace, schools and community groups, that if we all act together and pledge to make small changes, we can all reduce the carbon we produce and the finite resources we use. This can really make a big difference to climate change.
From switching off lights, appliances and monitors when you leave the room to recycling more or using the car less, we can all pledge to make a real difference to the amount of harmful carbon that's released into the atmosphere.
The Climate Change campaign aims to reach a significant number of the 2million plus population and bring about a better understanding of the issues, making us all feel more able tackle climate change, at home, work and leisure.
Everybody's talking about climate change' is a local authority initiative, funded by DEFRA which aims to shift public attitudes and help people feel better able to tackle climate change.
NOTES TO EDITORS
DEFRA support is through the national Climate Challenge Fund with the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Local Authorities Energy Partnership (LAEP) successful bid for funding receiving the largest national allocation for a project of this type.
The LAEP comprises of the 19 local authorities who make up the two counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, plus the local Groundwork Trust and Energy Efficiency Advice Centre. Contributions from this partnership met the capital cost of the Campaign Vehicle whilst an element of the DEFRA allocation meets promotional /running costs.
The vehicle is run on bio-diesel, photo-voltaic cells are used to charge batteries for low voltage display lighting and the CO2 impact of the vehicle for the duration of the campaign will be subject to carbon off-set to make it carbon neutral in operation.
