Campaign Bus - Warsop Town Centre

Warsop Town Centre
28 October 2008

Welcome

Our campaign bus has been touring Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire for the past year, so we know that everybody really is talking about climate change!

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing us today, and it's easy to think that it's too late, too big or too complicated to do anything about it. But if we all take some simple steps, now, together we can tackle climate change.

Have a look round the site - find out how to reduce your carbon footprint, brush up on your facts in The Knowledge, make a pledge to take action, try our quiz, check out the next stop for the climate change bus, and find out what's going on in your area. We've got lots of resources available for schools, and are starting work on a new section for community groups.

Chesterfield Climate Heroes

Chesterfield Climate ChangeLocal Councillors in Chesterfield have been helping to spread the word about climate change and encouraging family and friends to sign a ‘pledge’ to reduce their carbon emissions.

As part of the ‘Everybody’s Talking’ campaign, Chesterfield councillors were set the challenge of collecting ten pledges each, and first to hit the target were councillors in Hasland. Shown here holding their pledge forms, Cllrs Arnold, Dunks and Butt have been encouraging people to save energy at home by insulating their lofts, switching off lights and remembering not to leave their TVs on stand-by. Melanee Livesey, Energy Officer at the Borough said, “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing us today, and we felt it was important for local councillors to be leading the way. If everyone in Chesterfield pledges to do their bit, together we can make a real difference.”

Climate change is the biggest challenge facing us today; pledge to help us tackle it

The little things we do make a big difference; will you pledge to make a change?

Over the coming weeks we'll be adding more information to this website, designed to support our 'Everybody's talking' campaign. But to begin with, we've provided a way for you to pledge to make a few simple changes to your lifestyle.

We've also included practical tips and other advice on how to tackle climate change.

Climate Change Minister endorses our Campaign

Mrs Joan Ruddock, the Minister for Climate Change, Biodiversity and Waste, gave a ringing endorsement to 'Everybody's talking about climate change' campaign which is designed to increased public awareness of climate change and help us all feel better able to tackle climate change at home and when travelling.

The Minister, who is MP for Lewisham, Deptford, was recently in the Victoria Shopping Centre, Nottingham, for a visit to the city to attend a Defra roadshow, 'Act on CO2', which provided the chance for people to log onto the Defra website and calculate their carbon footprint.  You too can do this now by clicking here

'Everybody's talking about climate change', is a joint-effort between all 19 local authorities in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, and is funded by Defra.  It was launched in March, and ends next February.

A number of councillors from the campaign partnership were able to meet Joan Ruddock and outline the work we are doing locally in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and calculate their personal carbon footprint.

Residents throughout the two counties are being asked to pledge to take practical steps to help tackle climate change, and reduce their household's CO2 emissions.  Nearly 5000 people have already done so and reduced their household carbon footprint by up to an amazing 25%

Schools-Image02If you feel you too can join in and pledge to help to tackle climate change, then please click here and add your personal pledge - it's quick, easy and really can make a difference.

A mobile exhibition unit, which runs on part bio-diesel fuel, and features carbon reducing photo-voltaic cells and a wind generator, is touring the two counties, answering residents' questions, giving practical advice on energy saving measures, and supplying low energy light bulbs.  For details of pledging events, please click here.

Commenting on the first six months of 'Everybody's talking', Ian Gordon, the campaign manager said "We've already seen a significant shift in people's awareness of climate change, and more and more of us are now taking practical steps to save energy, recycle and reduce pollution." "There is still a long way to go" he added, "but the campaign has got off to a good start and the realisation that together we realy can make a difference is now gaining momentum."
