Hayfield Parish Council Declares Climate Emergency
Thu, 18 April 2019Hayfield Parish Council has declared a climate emergency. The authority is now one of dozens around the country to adopt such a motion.
Sustainable Hayfield, which lobbied the council to take this action, said: ‘This is unashamedly good news… but it means nothing if not followed by hard work to develop a plan, consistent with the proposal to put to the Council, to limit the council’s own carbon emissions, so that they become a net zero carbon emitting institution.’
This follows our news item last month that Wirksworth Town Council adopted a similar motion and that the newly-created Derbyshire Climate Coalition has created a petition calling on the county council, and all district councils in the area, to declare an emergency and take steps to reduce their carbon emissions. Derbyshire Resident Publishes Think Like a Tree Book

Sarah Spencer, a Derbyshire resident, is publishing a practical personal development book called Think Like a Tree: the natural principles guide to life, which includes discussion of climate change solutions. Published on 1st May, the book aims to reveal the underlying principles of nature’s secrets of success by drawing on woodland examples from around the globe.
Sarah lives with her family on a smallholding in the National Forest in Derbyshire. She turned to the principles she observed around her in nature when she was suffering from a rare chronic illness to actively design her way back to health. She now shares her insights to help others via Think like a Tree workshops for adults and children.

New Nottingham Air Pollution Group Launches
Thu, 18 April 2019A new community group is aiming to tackle air pollution in Nottingham. Green Lights Notts is a new community-based research, evidence-based lobbying and public campaigning group that aims to improve people’s quality of life through the reduction of air pollution. The group is doing this in three key ways:
- City Council monitoring & reporting
- A research project
- Community & public engagement activities
The group is next meeting on Monday 29th April at 7:30 pm at the Vat and Fiddle.
