More than 100 New Members Attend XR Nottingham Meeting

More than 100 people attended a new members’ meeting of a local group taking action on climate change recently. XR Nottingham, which aims to tackle the global emergency that is climate change, is now holding weekly drop-in sessions and workshops on Mondays from 7:30pm-9:30pm at the Sumac Centre on Gladstone Street.

Derbyshire County Council to Debate Climate Emergency
Tue, 14 May 2019Derbyshire County Council will debate a motion to declare a climate emergency on 15th May. The move follows a co-ordinated campaign by a number of community groups across Derbyshire, all members of Derbyshire Climate Coalition. The groups are asking the council to:
1. Declare a Climate Emergency
2. Commit to making Derbyshire County Council a net zero carbon local authority by 2030
3. Develop a clear plan within six months for a route towards being net zero carbon
4. Call on the UK Government to provide the necessary support and resources to enable effective carbon reductions
Local authorities in the area which have recently declared a climate emergency include Nottingham City Council, Rushcliffe Borough Council, Wirksworth Town Council and Hayfield Parish Council.
On 1st May, the UK became the first county in the world to declare a climate emergency.

Visit Hockerton Housing Project in Nottinghamshire

Due to popular demand Hockerton Housing Project is opening its doors for one extra day this year. Intrigued by what an earth-sheltered home might look, or feel like, inside? Or wanting an overview of what it is to live sustainably? Join a small group tour, led by a resident of the project to give you a personal view on what it’s like to live in this sustainable co-housing project. This tour includes a guided walk around the site to learn about our food, water and renewable energy systems, a tour of one of the homes, and a presentation on the challenges faced during the build, and subsequent development, of the project.

Belper’s Community, Eco and Arts Festival is a celebration of local living, which aims to share ways of reducing our impact on the planet, whilst connecting the local community in a relaxed, safe and uplifting way.
This year’s festival will have plenty of activities on offer for all the family: for the children there will be the Toy Library, a hand-powered vintage carousel, nature-connection activities, fairground games and hair braiding for kids and adults alike. In the well-being area there will be nutrition workshops, skincare demos and the return of the Native American medicine wheel. More is still to be announced!
The two music stages will feature local musicians and are solar powered.
