UK Transport Plan Presents a Radical Future

On 26th March, the Department for Transport quietly published Decarbonising Transport: Setting the Challenge. It presents an unprecedented view of the future of transport in the UK. To achieve its 'net zero' target by 2050, the government recognises it must act quickly and decisively to deliver policies making walking, cycling and public transport our main means of travel.
It is unclear, as yet, how this will fit with the £27 billion road building program announced by the U.K. government duringthe 11th March budget.
Xavier Brice, chief executive of cycling and walking charity Sustrans, said: "The foreword of this report points to an achievable future where how we move around results in healthier places and happier lives for everyone. We will need to work hard to get there. The report pulls no punches on its current assessment of where we are. Transport is the biggest source of carbon emissions, and private cars cause the lion’s share. Electric vehicles aren’t the solution….”
Although the report has been welcomed by campaigners, it has also been criticised for its weak action against aviation emissions.

An exciting opportunity to work with communities and householders to tackle climate change and fuel poverty in Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham & Nottinghamshire has arisen.
Marches Energy Agency (MEA), is recruiting a part time Project Manager to lead on its East Midlands work.
MEA; a charity with over 20 years experience of in tackling climate change and fuel poverty, working with householders and communities; provides this website on behalf of the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Local Authority Energy Partnership, a partnership of local authorities in the area. We also run a range of projects with communities and households.

Climate Change Summit Held in Matlock

On 3rd March 2020, more than 150 people from local businesses, housing developers, councils and other public bodies gathered at a Climate Change summit held at County Hall in Matlock and organised by Derbyshire Country Council. The aim of the event was to set out the vision and ambition for how they can all work together to achieve a net zero target by 2050.
There were speakers from various Derbyshire-based businesses and organisations, such as Toyota, Longcliffe Quarries and Torrs Hydro New Mills, who shared examples of existing low carbon initiatives. They were joined by representatives from climate change focused community organisations like Moors for the Future and Liftshare. People attending the event also had the chance to test drive the council’s new fleet of electric pool vehicles.
Council Leader and Climate and Sustainability Champion Councillor Barry Lewis said: ‘Clearly action is needed on an unprecedented scale and by 2032 the county council intends to be carbon neutral in terms of our property, street-lighting and fleet operating with net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
‘But there is a far bigger challenge that faces us. The council’s own carbon footprint makes up just one per cent of emissions from Derbyshire as a whole. And this is where we intend to grab hold of the nettle and strive to make a real difference. No business, organisation or individual can halt global warming alone. But by working together, we can design a new way of living and set a strong example for others to follow.’

Broxtowe Borough Council launches Green Futures Campaign

In July 2019, the Council declared a 'Climate Change Emergency' and committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2027. In support, the council has launched a Green Futures campaign to encourage residents, businesses and community groups in Broxtowe to contribute to lowering carbon emissions. The campaign will highlight all the things the council will be doing over the coming months to reduce their carbon emissions, as well as promote how residents and businesses, as well as employees can do their bit.
