Water is the Theme at Hatton Village Fair

Despite Hatton Village Fair’s traditional duck race being rained off this year (apparently rain isn’t as good for plastic ducks as it is for the real variety!) the Fantastic Home team was out in force offering advice on insulation, energy saving and, rather appropriately given the weather, hydro power.

Kris McGowan from Marches Energy Agency was on hand to offer advice on getting your home insulated through South Derbyshire District Council’s Warmstreets Scheme. Members of local community group Tutbury Eco Power promoted their community hydro scheme and spoke with people who are interested in their own hydro schemes.

Our giant board games – one about low carbon living and another about recycling – were popular with young and old alike.

We were able to distribute free energy saving items that will save 486,855 litres of water, more than 13,000kg of carbon and more than £11,000 over their lifetime’s use.

LEAF Projects Completed in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire

A number of community groups in the two counties completed their LEAF-funded projects during March. For more information, and some inspiration, see some of their websites:

Olympic-themed Funding Available in Nottinghamshire

To celebrate the arrival of the torch relay in Nottinghamshire individuals and community groups are being encouraged to make a pledge to do something in their community. Groups can apply for funding or up to £250 to get a project started or to organise a community pledging event. Applications must be in by 29th June.

Insulation Now Free For Even More People

A local free insulation scheme just got even better! Until the end of this year households in 11 Local Authority areas of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are entitled to free loft and cavity wall insulation regardless of their income, thanks to Warmstreets, the only insulation scheme endorsed by the authorities involved.

This time limited offer includes free loft insulation for any private household (owned or rented) that currently has none or less than 100mm – whereas previously the figure was 60mm. Those who already have between 100mm and 150mm of loft insulation can pay a subsidised price of just £99 to have it topped up to the recommended level.

This offer is better than free! Not only can the scheme install loft and cavity wall insulation for free, but you will save money on your energy bills for years to come as your home will be easier to heat. It will also reduce the impact of your home on the environment. However, the free offer is only possible due to government subsidises which will end at the end of 2012. After that loft and cavity wall insulation is expected to cost several hundred pounds. Take advantage while you can!

Householders who are interested can call Warmstreets on 0800 043 9569, or if calling from a mobile, 0333 577 9569, to arrange a survey today. Alternatively, visit: www.warmstreets.co.uk. Offers are subject to survey and depend on house size.

·        A project aimed at enabling existing or new community groups to develop their purchasing power by working collectively on behalf of individual consumers.
·        A project aimed at businesses to empower their employees or consumers to group for community buying.

The deadline for applications is 15 May 2012.
