National News in brief (December 2020):

Green Homes Grant Extension

The government has announced that the Green Homes Grant (GHG) will be extended by one year. You now have until the end of March 2022 to apply for a voucher. This could be good news for people struggling to find local Trustmark installers to complete works within the original short timescales.

GHG is a new government voucher scheme in England, worth about £2 billion, to help households install energy efficiency measures. Vouchers up to £5,000 are available to owner-occupiers and landlords. They are required to make a minimum contribution of 33% of the cost of upgrades.

Low - income owner-occupiers can apply for vouchers of up to £10,000 with no household contribution required. Funding (£500 million of the £2 billion) will also be available to Local Authorities in England to support the upgrade of homes for low-income households in their areas.

UK Government announces ten point plan for a green industrial revolution

On the 18th November, the long-awaited UK Government’s 10 point climate plan was revealed:

  1. Quadrupling offshore wind power by 2030 to power every UK home.
  2. Boosting low carbon hydrogen production.
  3. Investing in nuclear power as a clean energy source.
  4. Accelerating the transition to electric vehicles.
  5. Encouraging use of public transport, cycling and walking.
  6. Supporting difficult-to-decarbonise aviation and maritime sectors through research.
  7. Insulating homes and public buildings.
  8. Investing in carbon capture initiatives.
  9. Planting 30,000 hectares of trees every year
  10. Pledging to make London 'the global centre of green finance.

On Thursday 3rd December, prime minister announced a new carbon reduction target. He promises a 68% reduction in annual carbon emissions by 2030, compared with 1990 levels.

The ambitious plan has been mostly welcomed by businesses and campaigners as a step in the right direction. However, the prime minister has been criticised for leaving emissions untouched in key areas such as roadbuilding, SUVs, high-speed rail, peat, overseas finance, and coal mining.

Other policies are even driving emissions up, undermining the government’s ‘green vision’. For example, the government is still going ahead with a £27bn roads programme.
