Community Share Offer: Torrs Hydro New Mills Ltd

Torrs Hydro New Mills Ltd, the country’s first community-owned and funded hydro-electric scheme, is seeking to raise £25,000 in community share investment to make significant modifications to the plant to improve its energy output.

The proposed modifications will allow the plant to operate when the river levels are more extreme. With this newer technology, the plant is expected to produce around 30% more energy per year.

This is a great opportunity for more local people to become involved in the project. The community share offer document will be available from early November.

Applications will close on Friday 11th December at 11.59pm.

To be added to the mailing list for further information about this, email secretary@torrshydro.org, or call 01663 747603.

Try an Electric Scooter in Nottingham and Derby City.

Wind Mobility has been chosen to operate Electric Scooter schemes in both Nottingham and Derby City. More than 200 electric scooters will be available to hire in Nottingham during a 12-month trial. Several e-scooters will also be available to try in Derby, with details of that scheme to be confirmed by Derby City Council soon.

Key workers who live and work in Nottingham City are now able to hire an e-scooter at a discounted rate of £30 per month through a special take home service complete with helmet and charging cable. Full training and maintenance checks will be provided. Short term rentals (12p per minute) will be available to everyone over the age of 16 with a provisional driving licence.

The e-scooters are highly visible and are being fitted with integrated helmets. Hand Sanitiser will be provided on each e-scooter. They will be fitted with ‘geo-fencing’ technology which will allow the council to restrict where e-scooters can be used. Speed will be limited to 4mph in pedestrianised areas in the city. A 24-hour support line is in place to enable people to report issues

N.B:- Only e-scooters part of Department of Transport-approved schemes can be used on public roads. It is still illegal to ride any other e-scooter on public road.

The Green Influencers Scheme: A New Youth Environmental Social Action Fund

The Ernest Cook Trust (in partnership with the #iwill Fund) has launched a new funding programme for the environment and youth work sector - the Green Influencers Scheme.  The scheme will fund 40 Green Mentor posts based in Host Organisations (Registered Charities or Not-for-Profit organisations) across England until January 2023.

Green Mentors will be tasked with recruiting and supporting groups of young people (10-14 years old) in running environmental social action projects that tackle the climate crisis and connect to their local communities. The scheme can provide £15,000 per year to help cover a Green Mentor salary and £3,000 towards the organisations administration costs. Additional funds are then available for individual Green Influencers groups to kickstart their projects.

Applications to be a host organisation are open now.  Deadline for applications is 23rd October at 5pm.

Green Homes Grant Scheme Launches

Green Homes Grants scheme is a government funded initiative to provide homeowners with vouchers to use towards installing energy efficient measures in their homes, such as insulation or low carbon heating. The scheme is available in England only.

From Wednesday 30th September, homeowners in England can apply for vouchers that will cover around two thirds of the cost of measures up to a maximum of £5,000 per household. For those on low incomes and in receipt of eligible benefits, the full cost can be paid up to a maximum of £10,000 per household.

You can apply for the grant now through the Government website, or check your eligibility first through the Government's Simple Energy Advice Questionnaire. The latter will allow you to create a personalised list of measures you might be able to get funding for.  The results can be used to obtain quotes from accredited tradespeople, needed for the application.
