After they were largely placed on hold by the coronavirus pandemic, Extinction Rebellion (XR) has resumed its efforts to urge the government to take urgent action against the climate crisis this month. A series of actions, aimed at highlighting the worsening ecological crisis, have been taking place across the UK, including London and Manchester.
Last Friday (4th September), XR protesters blocked three printing presses overnight accusing mainstream media of failing to report on the climate crisis. Protesters targeted presses which print Rupert Murdoch-owned titles, including The Sun and The Times. Out of the approximately 80 initially arrested, seventy-seven people have been charged.
Meanwhile, more than 600 people have been arrested during five days of climate crisis protests last week in central London. One of their aims was to urge MPs to back the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill.
A year after the UK declared a climate emergency, a new Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill (CEE Bill) has been launched which demands that the UK government brings the urgent action needed to mitigate the climate and ecological crisis into law. It will be put before parliament if it receives enough support.
The Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill calls for the UK government to:
The CEE Bill was written with contributions by respected climate, energy, and ecology academics, alongside a lead author of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report. The Bill also has the backing of Extinction Rebellion and Volans, a business sustainability firm.

Sustainable Hayfield, which has received grant funding to do a feasibility study on the potential for a solar farm within the parish, has undertaken a public consultation on local residents' views on renewables powering their homes. Survey forms were delivered door to door and by email. Links were shared via social media and a local shop acted as collection point for hard copy versions. A socially distanced small street stall was staffed to garner interest.
At close of survey, an impressive 180 responses were received. Responses will now be analysed to help guide Sustainable Hayfield's future approach.
