Full details
Location: Hockerton Parish, Nottinghamshire.
People from the Hockerton area have been meeting since July 2006 to promote a more sustainable Hockerton; Meetings have always been open and have been advertised in the village hall notice board and by leafleting residents. So far 48 people have attended at least one of the eleven meetings held between July 06 to February 08.
Aims and objectives have been formalised. The aim of the group is to make Hockerton a more sustainable village and reduce the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere. This would include supplying its own energy needs from renewable sources. The objectives in brief are:
- A reduction in energy demand.
- Renewable electricity generation.
- Renewable heating methods.
- Reduced impact from travel.
- Increase in the use of local skills and resources.
- Reduction in the amount of waste produced.
- Increase the amount of self sufficiency in water and water treatment.
- Raise the awareness of sustainability issues through education.
It is envisaged that to achieve renewable electricity generation the community would install and own a wind turbine capable of generating the equivalent electricity requirement of the parish and able to produce an income for the investors and the local community. Community income would be put towards meeting the other objectives. We need to raise money to purchase this turbine and set up the community organisation necessary to run its operation.
Renewable energy generation has been the focus of the group but other smaller objectives have been achieved while this progresses. Traffic calming measures have been campaigned for and achieved, Local food consumption promoted and energy saving measures promoted. Currently; a cycle / footpath is being sought for the village and information on energy use in the village is being obtained.
