The aims of Melbourne Area Transition:

Melbourne Area Transition is a group of residents in and around Melbourne in South Derbyshire, who want to work (and play) together to make the Melbourne area a more sturdy/resilient community in the face of the two massive challenges of Peak Oil and Climate Change. We are particularly keen on developing enterprises resilient to the big issues and capable of building sustainable local livelihoods.

The group holds monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at Church House with a talk/ event happening at each one.

Please  check www.melbournetransition.org for details of what is going on and how you can get involved.

Past campaigns/activities/work:

We organise ourselves into project groups focused on activities with a small ‘admin hub’ to support the groups. There are all sorts of activities to keep this rolling, from planting bushes to energy auditing local houses to administering the mailing list to book-keeping for events and more. Everyone is welcome to meetings and to get involved. Please do – the problems are big and urgent, but we can reduce our vulnerability to their implications here, and we’ll have some fun as we do so!

Forthcoming activities/work/campaigns:

  • Our solar buying group aims to accelerate uptake of domestic renewable energy.
  • Our project to put solar PV panels on our grade 1 listed church (pictured) has received planning permission.
  • Help with developing and delivering a viable sustainable business model for our 19 hectares of potential community woodland will be particularly welcome.
  • We hope to begin work on a demonstration food forest soon.
