Summary
Sustainable Edale aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the parish of Edale and raise awareness of sustainability in the area. The group are investigating hydro power, local food and transport amongst other things. Successes so far include bulk buying clubs for coal and oil, and the production of reusable shopping bags.
Full description
The group covers the community of the whole parish of Edale, approx 100 households with 380 residents. Objectives are to reduce the carbon footprint of the parish and to raise awareness of sustainable issues within the parish.
The group has deliberately been set up with a very flat management structure comprising a five activity groups:
- Energy and water conservation – research and advice to residents on insulation, energy saving, etc.
- Energy Generation – currently investigating hydro
- Transport – investigating improving non vehicular transport options in valley
- Waste & recycling – have produced re-useable bags and T shirts
- Food – looking at local produce, allotments, group buying (oil and coal clubs set up)
Plus 4 support groups
- Communications organisation & structure - temporary group to research and recommend structure of organisation.
- Survey – currently undertaking a survey of all residents
- Funding – researching funding streams and advice to activity groups
- Accounting – looking after the books.
- Communications – handling the media
Groups meet and develop independently then all come together quarterly.
